Iceland:
Among the musically inclined, Iceland is perhaps best known as the home country of the fabulous singer Bjork. She's a somewhat eccentric character, and Iceland is a somewhat eccentric country. It can't help but be eccentric, as it's a small island in the North Atlantic, with only 300,000 inhabitants and a road system that extends only around the rim of the island. The interior is settlement and road-free, and is a target of adventure travellers and ecotourists. There are 200 volcanoes, plus geysers, glaciers, hot springs, fjords and stunning green valleys, and other strange topological eccentricities such as lava towers and lava deserts. In the south central end of the island is the Vatnajokull icecap and the 2,119-metre peak, Hvannadalshnukur.
Icelanders, who must live through long, cold winters, have the highest per-capita rate of book and newspaper buying in the world. Iceland also has the highest longevity rate in the world, and the lowest infant mortality rate. If you can afford to go there, Iceland is one of the most interesting places for an adventure traveller to check out.
