Guyana:
Although it doesn't spring immediately to mind as a perfect ecotourism destination, this English-speaking country is covered with dense rainforest, and the population is only about 800,000, most of whom live in Georgetown the capital or in other coastal towns. The coast is used for farming rice, sugarcane and other tropical plant products. The government is indeed beginning to promote Guyana as an ecotourism destination. To get into the interior rainforest you fly or take a ferry along one of the many riverways. Then you can hire guides to take you on a tour of the forest.
Guyana has an interesting mix of people: South Asian, black and mixed, Chinese and Amerindian. There have been some tensions among these groups, but mostly the society is harmonious. People from Guyana are friendly, and since English is the first language, it's easy to communicate. About 96 per cent of the people get a basic education, and the health service is accessible to everyone.
