Chad:

Tourists wanting to be pampered in resorts never go to Chad, one of the poorest countries in Africa. It has a low literacy rate, sparse medical facilities, undeveloped infrastructure, drought in the arid north, and a lot of armed robbery and vandalism. Almost everyone is dirt poor. The tropical, cotton-producing south is the most populous, with mostly Christian people, while the desert in the north is populated by the nomadic Muslim Toubeau people.

Adventure travellers who don't mind roughing it will find national parks and game reserves well worth a visit. There are also prehistoric rock paintings on the Tibesti plateau, and interesting Muslim cities in Central Chad. Politics in Chad are volatile, although things are more stable lately.
