Burkina:
Burkina is a small, landlocked, poor, agricultural country in West Africa. Most of it is taken up by the Sahel desert. Approximately 10 million people eak out an existence, with many men migrating to the cities for work when the land refuses to produce. Women have a lot of power and influence in the home, but are still denied access to education and senior professional positions. Ten per cent of the people are Christian, 25 per cent Muslim, and the rest have retained their indigenous beliefs.
Travellers to Burkina usually go on safaris into the interior and tour the cities, which have interesting old colonial and African architecture. Crime levels are low, since everyone belongs to a family group and is accountable.
