Angola:
The 1994 truce between the UNITA rebels and the Angolan government was broken early in 1999, bringing new paroxysms of violence and fighting, and hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing their besieged villages.
In total, 500,000 people have died in the fighting, and 4 million people became refugees.
Mass starvation and disease are common.
In February 2002, Jonas Savimbi, the leader of the UNITA rebels, was shot dead, and the rebels appear to be in disarray and losing their impetus. But who knows what's going to happen. At present, there is still no reason to go to Angola unless you have a death wish or you want to work for the refugees.
